Frequently Asked Questions
The primary goal of playing a JAM is developing skills to layer multiple viewpoints before forming a response. JAMs look like fun and games (they are!) but the point of gaming is to create pathways that support conflict resolution. Think: skilled reading, background knowledge, impulse control, & verbal reasoning. Taken together, these tactics build perspective: taking all relevant data into account.
Yes! JAMs are a celebration of our democratic republic; an extraordinary mosaic of different people, cultures, languages and religions. Of course, it's only natural that we've clashed from time to time. That's exactly why we built these games. To explore the tangled roots of our shared humanity. In that spirit, eduPLAYnation neither lionizes nor demonizes historical figures. Instead, games position students to empathize with an assigned role insofar as they're revealing data. As troubling patterns arise, players develop diagnostic tools that are likely to help them course correct when their lives go sideways. Hey, it happens to the best of us!
We're positive. We tested JAMs with every age group from 10-70 and found they work brilliantly everywhere! In contrast to "emotional" conflicts, JAMs are gentle, inclusive, and exhaustive. Who doesn't wanna learn how to JAM?(Note, elders at beta sides reported feeling angry their history classes were mired in myth and void of complexity). The reason we decided to level JAM texts for 4th & 5th graders is because BRAVE board games work best at those grade levels and JAMs were initially designed to enhance that content. Why? FIRST, R&D illustrated this demographic is the sweet spot for playing through narratives. SECOND, upper elementary is just beginning to think independently and critically, whilst JAMs walk players through the complexities of higher order thinking every step of the way. THIRD, research shows reading & writing are binding tasks. Meaning JAMs give kids something to write home about, literally! FOURTH, upper elementary students love playful, skilled learning (who doesn't). To that point, cognitive science indicates memories last longer when the social brain is involved in learning. FIFTH, perspective taking and conflict resolution are fantastic skills to hone before middle school when adolescence makes life even more tricky!
Conflict is inevitable; how we engage is a choice that influences outcomes. We can react, OR we can respond with knowledge based skills that help everyone transcend a conflict's root causes. But it's not easy! That's why children need to practice conflict in safe spaces, and as often as possible.
Yes. JAMs use multiple viewpoints to engage diverse learners through collaborative, inquiry-led design.
Absolutely. Each JAM includes Guiding Questions to support rich discussions. Look, kids have AI to help them find the correct answer to any question. Moving forward, adults are tasked with modeling curiosity, humility, and trust by saying, “I'm not certain. Let’s investigate!”
We provide a range of leveled texts for each JAM. We do this because reading level, test scores, first language, and cultural background may not the best indicators of intellect or potential.
No problem! Create a few groups of 5, whereby two students collaborate on one role. OR, create a group of 3 so a strong reader can try tackling two roles.
JAMs are fast-paced, true. There are a few reasons we think you can pull it off. 1) Research shows we're more productive & creative when problem solving has constraints; 2) Beta sites were so intrigued by this method that we believe if you JAM all the time, your class will accept responsibility for learning how to manage their time (a great skill, btw). 3) Mastering new procedures includes developing strategies for: note-taking; re-framing each text as a "missing piece" of a larger puzzle; learning how to ask key questions.
Respectfully, we start with the belief that children are much smarter than adults have ever credited them. Of course, they aren't small adults either. That's why we've created Pre-Game Warm-Ups (booklets) to play ahead of JAMs; and JAMs to play between BRAVE games. In sum, we scaffold everything, consistently positioning students to strengthen their inherent weaknesses, academic & social.
As parents of older children, we'll take the long view and tell you that real and meaningful learning supports long-term success. Time and again, we've seen how this human-centered approach drives positive behavioral patterns like patience, kindness, perseverance, and collaboration.
Yes! Our programming strives to meet a range of traditional social studies standards. Plus, we use STEM principles to systematically position students to identify & clear bias.
Content is one thing; process is another; the term science applies to both. eduPLAYnation positions students as scientists to observe, gather, and organize data for the most objective analysis of historical events as humanly possible. We use three scientific principles to reinforce the scientific method. FIRST, gameplay uses the 5Es of Inquiry-Led Learning to outline procedures and process with the goal building & studying a "living model of the past" so players can search for bias. SECOND, BRAVE gaming session are structured by NGSS Cross-Cutting Principles, i.e., systems; cause & effect; force, instability & change; patterns. THIRD, eduPLAYnation is a Game Theory application called "repeated games," insofar our games study the role trust plays in conflict in cooperation. Note, Game Theory is a branch of mathematics that studies how interdependent players makes choices given a set of constraints and number of variables.
100%. Our programming is designed to lay a foundation for 4th & 5th graders to have success in equivalent classes at higher grades, including the APUSH exam. Why? Cognitive Load Theory suggests working memory is limited; new knowledge needs to be processed & stored before attempting to acquire more new knowledge. This means it's in a student's best interest to start banking social studies in elementary school. If so, they won't be starting from scratch when they reach middle & high school, rather, they'll be working from strength to strength to build on existing knowledge. But don't take our word for it! The Scarborough Reading Rope demonstrates how background knowledge supports literacy outcome and literary knowledge. In any case, reach out to your district's high school history teachers to see if they'd prefer teaching students who've played our games, as opposed to students who haven't. Heck, they're likely to suggest their students use JAMs to prepare for the APUSH.
Elephanta Education has had an IRB from the Wyoming Department of Health to conduct research since 2018. Since that time we've tested our programming with over 2,500 subjects across Wyoming--on and off the Wind River Reservation--and the Minneapolis Public School District.
Yes! Pre-Game Warm-Ups, JAMs and BRAVE games have vocabulary lists. Plus, our method uses embedded vocabulary so readers can see new words in context. BOGO!
There are currently 20 JAMs across 2 social-studies strands, 10 JAMs/strand in geography & government. Each JAM package includes one 50-minute activity, an optional Pre-Game Warmup, and six ELA extensions.
Schemas are concept ideas that students use to make abstract ideas applicable. Schemas also help student detect and organize patterns. Note, we use the same 10 schemas to build every JAM series, starting with "Game Theory," Context," "Perspective," "Change," and so on. This provides consistency to ensure students practice spiraling the same set of skills across an infinite subject areas.
Each JAM has an optional lesson, a Pre-Game Warm-Up. Print double-sided, head-to-head, and fold into a booklet. Don't forget to staple the spine! Inside, students read about that JAM’s dedicated schema in three brief sections. Note, each section includes a short sets of questions & reflections. Plus, booklets contain vocabulary lists and embedded vocabulary.
There are 16 pages in each JAM package.
No formal training is required. Booklets and JAM packets are Print & Play, intuitive and teacher-friendly. If you'd prefer some PD to start, especially with BRAVE games, we're happy to figure out a way to train your staff, either in person or online. We'll make it work! Reach out!
The idea of being irrelevant is scary, yet teachers aren't meant to have all the answers. This is more true than ever given the rise of AI. Moving forward the role of teacher is to help students learn how to ask meaningful questions.
JAMs are shortform, "print & play" activities available through a subscription model at this website. They can be played as stand-alone activities or as prequels & sequels to bridge BRAVE games. Meanwhile, BRAVE games are a one-time purchase that come complete in a 12" x 12" box containing original artwork, game pieces, instructions, a storyteller booklet, PLUS a 2nd box containing the board game surface: a 4'x6' neoprene map of North America. BRAVE games take 5, one-hour sessions to play and have live links to step-by-step classroom instructions, plus animated videos and extensions.
According to Learning Science, reading & writing are reciprocal tasks. In response, we've crafted ELA extensions that position students to use "retrieval practice," "elaborating," "interleaving," and "analysis." Our sentence-level instruction provides practice reading and writing complex syntax likely encountered in game play.
BRAVE games are sold separately. And no, you don't have to incorporate BRAVE games into your classroom just because you're using JAMs. True, these board games are more involved than setting your students up on a device. True, they demand a certain level of preparation, setup and cleanup across five different sessions. That said, the board game surface is a neoprene mat that's easy to clean, roll & store in your closet. And BRAVE games make facilitating JAMs easier. Plus, we offer live links to walk you through the process if you don't want to read the instructions that come inside each game box. But PLEASE understand the power of BRAVE games to translate complex timelines and concepts into a series of manageable tasks (tactile, audio, visual & interactive) that are engaging, effective, and fun! This is especially true for English Language Learners, students on the spectrum, students who love narrative story telling, G&T who complain about being bored in class, students who don't trust authority, and students who tell their parents they didn't learn anything in school. Basically everyone.
It takes about one JAM for a user to find the swing of things!
Homeschoolers, social workers and adults have asked for access to JAMs because they’re a highly effective way to learn history, perspective taking, and conflict resolution. Plus, they're intuitive and flexible enough to use outside the classroom. But most importantly, they offer a safe space to practice empathizing. Note, empathy uses one's emotional response to cue cognition (externalizing) so learners scour their text to consider: Who, What, When, Where, How & Why.
Not yet! But we’re working on a plan to bring JAMs to every device!

Choose a school administrator to visit our website and click on our "Subscribe" button. Scroll down and click on "Subscribe Now." That person will need to go to "Sign Up" at the bottom of the page and enter their name & email. Next, they'll check their inbox (or junk box) to verify, then set a password. If they've already signed up, they will simply enter their email and password to login. Next, they'll choose the "School Plan," and enter payment details. Note, Wyoming residents must upload tax exempt documents to avoid sales tax (we work as quickly as possible to verify those documents, but there might be a 24-48 turn around before a confirmation email is generated). Next, your school administrator logs in and enters up to 12 teacher names/emails. This will cue the system to generate email invitations for each of those teachers so they can login for unlimited access. If a person doesn't see their invitation in their inbox, remind them to check their junk box.
